Sachem North Adopt-A-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive
Sachem North High School students culminated the building’s 21st annual Adopt-A-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive on Monday, November 24. Students prepared 735 complete Thanksgiving meal food baskets with the goal of helping families in need throughout the Sachem School District and the Town of Brookhaven.
Sachem North sudent government officers Julie Wilson (student government president) and Brad Bloomfield (publicity director) spearheaded the annual food drive which involved four weeks of organizing food collection and fundraising efforts.
An assembly was held on Monday morning, including several guest speakers, to thank participants for all their hard work. Brookhaven Youth Services representative Maria Pollack attended to thank students on behalf of hundreds of families throughout Brookhaven Town. Sachem School Board Member Douglas Duncan spoke of the hope contained in every food basket that was given to residents in need.
Students gave a standing ovation to their collective efforts when the auditorium stage curtain opened showing each of the 735 food baskets. The success of the food drive was a result of the 2,500 Sachem students and staff who donated food, money and, most importantly, time. Staff members from the superintendent’s office to the athletic office pitched in to make this food drive a success. Families and businesses in and around the Sachem School District also donated.
Sachem North student government advisors Gary Comstock and Alex Young were humbled by the collective efforts of Sachem North students. Alex Young offered Sachem students the words of former President John Kennedy as the assembly ended: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.”
