Turkish Parliament Member Visits Dowling College to Discuss Turkey’s Role in a Global Society
 
(Oakdale, N.Y.) Dowling College is proud to welcome featured Guest Speaker: Mithat Melen, Ph.D., Member of the Turkish Parliament, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).  This event will take place on Monday, February 2, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Hunt Room at Dowling’s Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. This event is free and open to the public.
 
About the speaker: Mithat Melen, Ph.D.
Dr. Melen received his primary & secondary education in Ankara, Ankara College. He graduated from the Academy of Economical & Commercial Sciences, Ankara. In addition, Dr. Melen took a one-year language course at the West London College and a two-month international banking training course at the Postipankki Helsinki, Finland.  Dr. Melen started his professional life at the treasury department of the Ministry of Finance in 1971. He worked at the NATO international secretariat as a financial assistant, and pursued his post-graduate study at Brussels and Istanbul University on the economical structure of the European Community. He was a trainee for six months in European Community’s Commission and worked as a European Community Section Chief at the Treasury department, Ankara Turkey.  In 1977, Dr. Melen was appointed as Financial Attache to the Embassy in Brussels, and in 1979, as Financial Counsellor to the same Embassy. He worked as the Economic and Trade counselor of the Turkish delegation to the OECD and led the negotiations for Turkey’s membership to the Asian Development Bank and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as Chief of Department Turkish Treasury in Ankara.
 
In 1991 and 2002, Dr. Melen was a candidate in general elections, but lost. In 2007, he won the general elections and became an MP from Istanbul, MHP party list. He is now a member of European Harmonisation Comisssion. Following the elections in 1991, Dr. Melen resigned from his post at the Treasury department. Dr. Melen has been teaching since 1985. In 1992, was appointed as Associate Professor to the Faculty of Economics of the University of Istanbul and became a professor in 1996. In addition, Dr. Melen wrote newspaper columns for several national newspapers for the last 15 years, actually writing for Dünya and Turkish Daily News. He has also been featured on programs for various TV and radio channels as moderator, was a consultant and prepared a mid-term evaluation report for the Employment and Training Project, which was a World Bank-loaned IIBK (Turkish Employment Office ) project. Dr. Melen has performed consultancy work on the privatisation of the energy sector, was the consultant to the Board of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry, as well as to some Anatolian industrialists and to local mayors. He has worked as Consultant to Business Develepment Centers in Van Eastern Turkey, as well as to small and medium enterprises. Dr. Melen is a Member of several NGO’S, author of five books, one in English, and speaks fluent English and French.
