Sachem Students Share Their “Love” of Reading
(Sachem, N.Y.) With a history of giving during the holidays, students at Waverly Elementary School in the Sachem School District sent 812 Valentine’s boxes filled with paperback books, school supplies and treats to eight local shelters on Long Island.
The Sachem grounds crew loaded the big white box truck to capacity and delivered the special treats to those in need on February 12. The parents, teachers, students and local organizations all jumped at the opportunity to help others and contributed to the project by bringing in supplies, decorated boxes and hand-made cards of encouragement.
The Valentine’s Day box project marks the conclusion of the building’s “Kindness and Justice Challenge” that began around Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. In addition to the boxes, students also made oversized puzzle pieces labeled with positive personal qualities and characteristics that interlocked along the walls of the hallways, wrapping around the entire building.
This year, Waverly Elementary students sent food baskets for Thanksgiving, gifts and food for Christmas and still they found it in their hearts to give more on Valentine’s Day.
