Sachem Student Receives Top Honors

(Sachem, N.Y.) Sachem North High School is pleased to announce that senior Chelsea Anderson was named one of the top runners-up in the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in New York. This prestigious award honors middle and high school students across the country for their outstanding commitment to community service.
Chelsea undertook a project at her school to promote positive metal health. She created a display where students could submit their secrets and fears anonymously on postcards. These cards were eventually compiled into a book and sold at the school, raising $500 for the National Suicide-Prevention Hotline. Chelsea’s hard work will be rewarded with the presentation of an engraved bronze Distinguished Finalist medallion in recognition of her accomplishments at an upcoming public event.
The annual Prudential Spirit of Community Award, now in its 14th year, selects state honorees by evaluating their personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth. Public and private schools as well as organizations like the Girl Scout Council, YMCA and 4-H chapters are eligible to nominate a student for award consideration. This year, over 5,000 nominations were received nationally which culminated in the selection of several runners-up and two state honorees in each state.
