New Yorkers Believe they are Suffering More Economy-related Stress and Pain than Other Americans

Long Island Press Releases & News

New “Massage On-The-Go” Debuts in New York to Relieve Neck and Shoulder Pain

(New York, N.Y.) According to a recent survey of New York office workers, commissioned by Haw Par Healthcare, makers of Tiger Balm, nearly two-thirds (61 percent) say they are feeling more stress than before the economic crisis began, and almost half (43 percent) are working more than they did a year ago. In addition, six in 10 of those surveyed report spending six or more hours a day at their desk, and more than half (53 percent) say that this time at work causes stress and physical pain, particularly in the neck and shoulders.

Both increased time at work and work-related stress contribute to the fact that almost three quarters (74 percent) of New Yorkers feel that they are more stressed out than those who live elsewhere.

The survey also found that at the same time that stress and stress-related pain is increasing, more than half (57 percent) of residents report cutting down on “self-pampering” indulgences, such as massages, hair maintenance and manicures, while looking for more affordable alternatives to manage and relieve their stress-related pain. Despite cutting down on such luxuries, over two-thirds (69 percent) still believe that a massage can help relieve stress-related pain.

In response to these trends, Duane Reade stores throughout the New York Metropolitan area are selling Tiger Balm Neck & Shoulder Rub, a topical pain reliever that provides a “massage on-the-go” from the world recognized pain relief brand “Tiger Balm.” This is the product’s first entry into the U.S. market.

“Since New York is the home of the nation’s financial center, it’s not surprising that almost three quarters of New Yorkers surveyed believe that they are feeling it worse than everybody else,” said Mr. AK Han, Director and General Manager of Haw Par Healthcare Ltd, makers of Tiger Balm. “We’re pleased to help New Yorkers manage their stress and relieve their pain by launching a new neck and shoulder pain version of Tiger Balm. People suffering from neck and shoulder pains may think that there is nothing they can do about it. Whether it be during times of economic crisis or during the normal day-to-day grind, we’re glad to provide new, effective, pain relief, so that people will not have to suffer in silence.”

The survey of 500 New Yorkers who live and work throughout Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs was commissioned by Haw Par Healthcare, Ltd., makers of Tiger Balm, and conducted by Promark Research using a listed sample from Survey Sampling.

Other facts uncovered in this survey of New York residents:

  • More than one-third (39 percent) of the respondents cited stress-related pain being most heavily concentrated in the neck and shoulder area.
  • Almost two-thirds (65 percent) of respondents who are clocking in longer hours or working harder say that stress-related pain affects their productivity at work.
  • Almost two-thirds (62 percent) say that the decline in their savings and retirement accounts is also a primary sources of stress.
