Breaking Ground to Build a Place of Hope
Demolition of Residence in Patchogue to Prepare for Construction of Permanent Housing For Families Who Have Fallen on Hard Times
(Long Island, N.Y.) On Wednesday, May 6th at 7:00 A.M., the Department of Public Works will demolish an eye sore on 18 Amity Street in Patchogue, NY. This project is a collaborative effort between the Village of Patchogue (Mayor Paul Pontieri) and Mercy Haven, Inc., to prepare the property for a beautiful new home. The site on Amity Street will serve as a building ground for a two-family eco-friendly duplex, for which construction is slated to begin in the early summer. Through two grants totaling approximately $2.5 million, Mercy Haven, Inc., purchased the home on Amity, along with three others in 2007; the homes, located in scattered sites throughout Suffolk County, will provide permanent housing for seven families who have been faced with challenging circumstances.
The Village of Patchogue was chosen in part because of Mayor Pontieri’s receptive nature to both this project and Mercy Haven Executive Director Sister Patricia Griffith. However, the renaissance of Main Street, access to public transportation, superb schools, and ample employment opportunities sealed the deal to purchase the residence on Amity Street. This home is within walking distance to the Village shops, the new YMCA, and the Patchogue Theater, and will provide the children of the families the opportunity to learn, play and grow in a stable, culturally rich environment.
Established in 1985, Mercy Haven, Inc. is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit 501c3 corporation. Mercy Haven’s mission is to engage and support Long Island’s most at-risk residents. Through advocacy, housing, supportive services, education and outreach we offer the community a place to experience and practice compassion.
