Long Island Press Releases & News

Men and Women Both In Action Memorial Day Weekend

(Plainview, N.Y.) – As the 2009 United Soccer Leagues season rolls on, the Rough Riders men and women will each play two road games over the next week before their next home doubleheader on Saturday, May 30th.

On Saturday, the men will travel to New Rochelle High School in Westchester to take on the Flames (1-0-2, 5 pts.) at McKenna Field. With their U.S. Open Cup hopes still alive, the Rough Riders (2-1-0, 6 pts.) will need a victory against Westchester, coupled with an Ocean City tie or loss in one of their two games this weekend to qualify for the prestigious tournament, which they last qualified for in 2007.

Next Wednesday, May 27th, the men will travel to Newark for a return engagement with the Ironbound Express (3-2-0, 9 pts), whom the Rough Riders defeated last Saturday 3-1, thanks to a hat-trick from Mike Palacio.

The Rough Riders women will make their first road trip of the season on Saturday when they visit the Western Mass Lady Pioneers (1-1-0, 3 pts.). After losing the season opener 1-0 to New Jersey and tying Boston this past Saturday, the women will be looking for their first win of the 2009 campaign.

Sunday afternoon they will leave Massachusetts and travel south to take on the Connecticut Passion (0-0-1, 1 pt.).

The Rough Riders men and women will return home for their third doubleheader of the season on Saturday, May 30th. The games begin at 5PM when the women host the Washington Freedom and continue at 7:30PM as the men take on the Rhode Island Stingrays. Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling the Rough Riders at (516) 622-3900 or at the ticket booth at Cy Donnelly Stadium. Adult tickets are $10, Youth 16 and under are $8, and groups of 12 or more are $6 each. One ticket is good for both games.

About the Long Island Rough Riders
The Long Island Rough Riders have been part of the Long Island soccer scene since their inception in 1994. The Rough Riders men and women’s team won their first National Championship in 1995. The Rough Riders men’s team featured former US National Team members Chris Armas, Tony Meola, and MLS star Giovanni Savarese. Since their initial success, the Rough Riders men’s team has gone on to win the United Soccer League (USL) 2nd Division National Championship in 2002 and has sent numerous players to Major League Soccer (MLS).

In 2007 the Rough Riders reacquired a W-League franchise, which was formerly known as the Lady Riders. The Rough Riders women’s team qualified for the Eastern Conference Finals in 2008.

In recent years, the Rough Riders organization has expanded to include the Junior Rough Riders program, featuring elite level players from 8 to 17 years of age. Junior Rough Riders teams from 13 to 17 years old participate in the Super Y-League (SYL), the youth component of the USL.
