(Long Beach, N.Y.) — Judge Thomas Phelan, candidate for New York State Supreme Court, 10th judicial district – Nassau and Suffolk counties,(www.judgephelan.com) will be aide to the Grand Marshalls of the 20th annual Ancient Order of Hibernians Irish Day Parade on Saturday, October 3, 2009
The annual Ancient Order of Hibernians Irish Day and Parade will begin at Washington Boulevard at 12:00 noon and will proceed all the way down to the West End where the street fair will be held. There will be fun for the entire family with rides, entertainment and delicious food. There are many tables selling handmade, eclectic, Irish and one-of-a-kind wares.
Judge Phelan is a member of Division 17, Saint Brendan the Navigator, Ancient Order of Hibernians and a founding member of the Irish Monument Committee. He is a recipient of the Irish Americans in Government President’s Award, the Nassau County AOH Feis Committee Fellowship Award and the Cardinal Mercier Assembly, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus Americanism Award. Judge Phelan has been honored by the Catholic Lawyers’ Guild and the Brehon Law Society. Justice Phelan currently serves as a Distinguished member of the Board of Governors of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick on Long Island, as well as Irish-Americans in Government, both Irish charitable organizations.
Judge Phelan is a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Oceanside, Inc., the Former Assistant District Attorneys Association, a past Director of 3481 Associates of Father Joseph O’Connell Council, Knights of Columbus, and a member of Cardinal Mercier Assembly, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Lawyers’ Guild.
A Supreme Court Justice since 1996, Justice Phelan is seeking reelection on November 3, 2009.
Thomas P. Phelan, born in Brooklyn and raised in Oceanside, is a graduate of Stony Brook University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from New York Law School. Justice Phelan is admitted to practice law in New York and Florida.
After serving as an Assistant District Attorney, he became Principal Law Clerk to a Supreme Court Justice and Nassau County Court Judge. Justice Phelan remained a Principal Law Clerk until June 1984, when he left government employment to engage in the private practice of law, specifically civil and criminal litigation as well as Surrogate’s Court practice. Phelan also served as a member of the Public Employees Relations Board of the Town of Hempstead until his appointment as a Judge of the District Court, Nassau County, in January 1991. He was elected to the District Court, Nassau County, Second District, in November 1991. After five years as a District Court Judge, Phelan won election to the New York State Supreme Court in 1996.
In his judicial career, Justice Phelan has had more than 100 decisions published in the Official Reports, N.Y. Law Journal and other prominent legal publications.
A resident of Oceanside for more than fifty-five years, Justice Phelan resides with his wife, Noreen. They have four children and four grandchildren.
