Fundraising Milestone Reached For Breast And Prostate Cancer Research

Long Island Press Releases & News

FUNDRAISING MILESTONE REACHED FOR 2009 Walk for Beauty, Walk for Life

(Stony Brook, N.Y.) – Thousands of Long Islanders took to the streets of Stony Brook to help raise money for both breast and prostate cancer research at the 16th Annual Walk for Beauty, Walk for Life, co-sponsored by The Ward Melville Heritage Organization and Stony Brook University Hospital.

A major achievement was accomplished this year as the $1,000,000 mark was reached in fundraising for the 4k/6k Walk, which took place October 4, 2009.  The Walk, which first began 16 years ago as an effort to raise awareness for the need of an annual mammography, begins at the Stony Brook Village Center, Main Street on the Harbor and follows a scenic route through this historic area, past landmarks dating back to the 18th and 19th century.

The Walk for Beauty Committee proudly made a check presentation to Dr. Michael Hayman, Associate Director for Research, Stony Brook University Cancer Center in the amount of $50,000, tipping the scales to reach this milestone. It was fitting that the presentation took place at the opening celebration of WMHO’s newest education program, “Medicine:  Past, Present & Future” at the historic Thompson House in Setauket.  December 2009 marked the 300th anniversary of the house, which was home to Dr. Samuel Thompson, an American patriot and physician during the 1700s.
