Diabetes Self-Management Classes Offered by Long Beach Medical Center

(Long Beach, N.Y.) – Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death and the leading cause of blindness among Americans today.  It is reaching epidemic proportions, with nearly 24 million people nationwide having been diagnosed with diabetes and another 57 million with pre-diabetes, a condition that puts them at increased risk for the disease.

Diabetes is a chronic, incurable disease that affects nearly every part of the body.  It raises an individual’s risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, neurological problems, and amputation, but self-management education and training can dramatically reduce these risks.

The Diabetes Education Center at Long Beach Medical Center is certified by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to offer what most consider to be the ‘gold standard’ in diabetes management programs. This 10-hour course is appropriate for anyone with diabetes, whether they are newly diagnosed or have been living with diabetes for years.  Spouses and significant-others are encouraged to attend as well, so that family support is consistent with the ADA’s guidelines.

Classes are taught by certified diabetes educators and include self-management techniques on diet, blood glucose monitoring, medications, exercise, foot care, eye care and lifestyle changes that will promote good health.

A series of three classes will be held from 6 to 9 pm on March 23, 25 and April 1, 2010.  Most insurance plans are accepted and sponsorships are available for anyone without health insurance through the generosity of the Lions Diabetes Education Program at Long Beach Medical Center.

To register for this course, or for information on other diabetes education programs, please call The Diabetes Education Center at (516)897-4354.
