King Kullen Replenishes Shelves At Lighthouse Mission

Long Island Press Releases & News

“America’s First Supermarket” donates food to the needy

(Bethpage, N.Y.) King Kullen, America’s First Supermarket, recently donated five pallets loaded with non-perishable groceries to the Lighthouse Mission in Bellport, New York. Lighthouse Mission, which provides food to as many as 600 people a week in Suffolk County, was in desperate need of food supplies. Assemblyman Dean Murray contacted King Kullen, which quickly responded with the emergency delivery.

“King Kullen has a long history of helping the less fortunate in the community,” explained Vice President of Store Operations Tony Femminella. “It’s a tradition that dates back to the company’s founding in 1930. We support groups like Lighthouse Mission because the need for their services is in great demand.”

In the past few years alone, King Kullen has donated more than $800,000 worth of surplus food to Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens, and other non-profit organizations.

“When I heard that Lighthouse Mission was running out of food, I immediately contacted King Kullen,” said Assemblyman Dean Murray, who passed legislation earlier this year in support of Lighthouse Mission. “This Long Island supermarket company with a history of helping its neighbors and customers has once again opened its heart to help feed the less fortunate in our community.”

In addition to Lighthouse Mission, King Kullen is a longtime supporter of Long Island Cares, Long Island’s first food bank and one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger action organizations, and Island Harvest, which delivers millions of pounds of food to a network of 600+ Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens, and other non-profit organizations.

Headquartered in Bethpage, New York, King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as American’s first supermarket. Founded in 1930 by Michael J. Cullen, King Kullen today employs more than 4,800 people and operates 46 stores and four Wild by Nature stores throughout Long Island and Staten Island.
