The Films of CHARLIE CHAPLIN through August 17 New 35mm Prints! Regular admission $10/Public, $6/Members, No advance tickets.

Everybody knows Chaplin’s iconic Tramp – the little fellow with the bowler hat and the oversized shoes. But how well do we know Chaplin’s films? These movies exemplify Chaplin’s status as an extraordinary performer and a complex artist, a maker of films that were and still are poignant, funny and deeply relevant. For many years, Chaplin films had no distribution in the United States. Now, thanks to Janus Films, brand new 35mm prints have been made. We invite you to experience the films of Charlie Chaplin as they should be seen: on the big screen, in the community of an audience.

Sunday, August 1 @ 12 Noon
Tuesday, August 3 @ 7:30pm
CITY LIGHTS
“Comes closest to representing all the different notes of Chaplin’s genius.” – Roger Ebert
Perhaps Chaplin’s best blend of comedy, pathos and class critique, this portrayal of the Tramp’s well-intended efforts to help a lovely, blind flower seller is one of the great classics of American cinema. Chaplin deftly juggles pathos and slapstick, befriending a millionaire who recognizes him only when blotto; and finding employment as an elephant-trailing streetcleaner and a frightfully mismatched boxer — all for the love of blind flower seller Virginia Cherrill. Time magazine called it “the greatest film of any year,” while James Agee described its final shot as “the highest moment in movies.”   USA, 1931, 83 min., b/w

Tuesday, August 4 @ 7:3 0pm
Sunday, August 8 @ 12 Noon
THE GOLD RUSH
The Lone Prospector (Chaplin) travels to the far-off Yukon in search of gold, but ends up falling in love with dance-hall girl Georgia Hale. Charlie takes refuge with fellow prospector Mack Swain in an isolated, comically-imbalanced cabin, where hunger forces him to eat that famous shoe. The masterpiece that features more great Chaplin moments than any other: the dance of the rolls, the cabin tottering over the cliff, the giant chicken, etc., etc. This version features Chaplin’s own music and poetic narration, added for his 1942 reissue. USA, 1925, 72 min., b/w

Monday, August 9 @ 7:30pm
THE GREAT DICTATOR
Never one to shy away from social commentary, Chaplin used the fact that Adolf Hitler had stolen his trademark mustache to create a comic masterpiece that combines political satire, slapstick comedy, and heartfelt sentiment. The Little Tramp becomes the Little Jewish Barber, breezily shaving a customer to Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody,” while his doppelganger, Adenoid Hynkel, “Der Phooey,” longingly dances with a world globe, and Ghetto spitfire Paulette Goddard tangles with stormtroopers. Chaplin’s final speech beautifully captures all of his hopes and fears for our crazy world. USA, 1940, 125 min., b/w

Thursday, August 12 @ 7:30pm
MODERN TIMES
Chaplin is in glorious form in this legendary satire of the mechanized world. As a factory worker driven bonkers by the soulless momentum of work, Chaplin executes a series of amazing slapstick routines around machines, including a memorable encounter with an automatic feeding apparatus.Along the way, he also unwittingly joins a Communist demonstration; and accidentally sniffs “happy dust.” Chaplin also draws a lively relationship between the Tramp and a street gamine (Paulette Goddard, then Chaplin’s wife).
USA, 1936, 87 min., b/w

Tuesday, August 17 @ 7:30pm
LIMELIGHT
“Few cinema artists have delved into their own lives and emotions with such ruthlessness and with such moving results.” – Time Out
Chaplin, as forgotten clown Calvero, abandons his own alcoholic despondency to buck up suicidal dancer Claire Bloom, in a vivid re-creation of the poverty, squalid digs, lower-class pubs, and second-rate music halls of his youth. An intensely personal film complete with recollections of his parents as well as his children in cameo roles, Limelight also features the only onscreen pairing of Chaplin and Buster Keaton. USA, 1952, 137 min.

MILLIE PERKINS was already an internationally famous model when director George Stevens cast her in the iconic title role in The Diary of Anne Frank. Her later performances include Wild in the Country with Elvis Presley, Monte Hellman’s classic westerns starring Jack Nicholson: The Shooting and Ride the Whirlwind, the cult classic Wild in the Streets, and Oliver Stone’s Wall Street. A visionary in every sense of the word, this famed 12th-century Benedictine nun was a Christian mystic, composer, philosopher, playwright, poet, naturalist, scientist, physician, herbalist and ecological activist. In Vision, New German Cinema auteur Margarethe von Trotta (Marianne and Juliane, Rosa Luxemburg, Rosenstrasse) reunites with recurrent star Barbara Sukowa (Zentropa, Berlin Alexanderplatz) to bring the story of this extraordinary woman to life. In a staggering performance, Lushly shot in the original medieval cloisters of the fairytale-like German countryside, Vision is a profoundly inspirational portrait of a woman who has emerged from the shadows of history as a forward-thinking and iconoclastic pioneer of faith, change and enlightenment.
