Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the classic movie & the current Jewish New Year
Director George Stevens’ life-altering experience of witnessing the death camps after WWII was doubtless responsible for his desire to adapt the famed diary of the teenaged Jewish girl, brilliantly played by Millie Perkins.
MILLIE PERKINS was already an internationally famous model when director George Stevens cast her in the iconic title role in The Diary of Anne Frank. Her later performances include Wild in the Country with Elvis Presley, Monte Hellman’s classic westerns starring Jack Nicholson: The Shooting and Ride the Whirlwind, the cult classic Wild in the Streets, and Oliver Stone’s Wall Street. Ms. Perkins will be interviewed by Foster Hirsch, author and pioneer in the establishment of academic film criticism. Based on the true life story of Hildegard von Bingen, the visionary nun whose grand claims often ran counter to the patriarchal world, and the first woman to be canonized, starring Barbara Sukowa.
Considered New German Cinema’s most prominent and successful female filmmaker, Margarethe von Trotta first pursued a career in acting, starring in films by such directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Volker Schlöndorff. In 1977, von Trotta directed her first feature, The Second Awakening of Christa Klages, and garnered international acclaim four years later with her film, Marianne and Juliane.
