Suffolk Countys First Digital Library Launches
Suffolk County’s 970,000+ library cardholders enjoy free access to ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music downloads, live homework help, career counseling, and much more through one online portal
(Long Island, N.Y.) Live-brary.com, the new digital branch of the public libraries of Suffolk County, officially launches on September 21, 2010 when library communities host Go Live with Your Library. Live-brary.com is an Internet site dedicated to the free online resources available to Suffolk County library cardholders.
Visitors to Live-brary.com will be able to enter the barcode from their library card to freely explore:
- A vast selection of entertainment: music, movies, audiobooks and e-books available for free download to personal computers, MP3 players, and eReaders;
- Live tutoring assistance for students grades K-12;
- Help with GED tests and writing papers;
- Career support and guidance;
- Research support through live chat with librarians;
- Information and videos featuring local libraries, latest offerings (with reviews and comments), and upcoming specials;
- Links to Live-brary.com social media sites;
Everyone is invited to join in the fun of a virtual ribbon cutting to launch the digital branch. Events will be taking place at libraries around the county between 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on September 21. Teams of ‘roving reporters’ will greet library patrons at numerous libraries around the County to introduce Live-brary.com and to video-record impressions from willing patrons on their memories, stories, and favorite moments spent at their local public library. These short segments will be uploaded to Live-brary.com for viewing. Balloons, music and entertainment will add to the launch day festivities.
“We’ve seen a surge in the circulation of our downloadable entertainment” observed Huntington Public Library Director Debra Engelhardt. “And as the cost of eReaders has come down and the selection of eBooks has gone up, summer vacationers made great use of this free resource and more are discovering the benefits and ease of access every day.”
In time for the school year, information will also be available to parents and students on the advantages to accessing secure, free study advice from certified teachers online through Live-brary.com. There is also study and test prep assistance available to college students as well as services for adult learners.
You can follow Live-brary.com on both Facebook and Twitter.
