Long Island Press Releases & News

Featuring Actress Jill Eikenberry and Writer David Rakoff on January 30

(Long Island, N.Y.) Symphony Space returns to the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AU PAC) to present Selected Shorts’ Funny Fictions on Sunday, January 30, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. L.A. Law star Jill Eikenberry and actor/writer David Rakoff will perform live readings of classical and contemporary works including Dorothy Parker’s classic story “But the One on the Right” and the hilarious adventure “The Valetudinarian” by Joshua Ferris (selected for The New Yorker’s “20 Under 40” best writers of 2010). This performance will be recorded from Adelphi University for broadcast on Public Radio International (PRI) and Symphony Space’s Selected Shorts series.

Jill Eikenberry won the Golden Globe for her role as Ann Kelsey on L.A. Law. She is also an Obie Award winner and five-time Emmy nominee. Ms. Eikenberry has appeared on Broadway, in film, and was featured on such TV hits as Law & Order, Numb3rs, and Judging Amy. David Rakoff is an openly gay actor, essayist, and journalist who has been a frequent contributor to PRI’s This American Life. In addition to appearing on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Mr. Rakoff is a prolific freelance writer and has been a regular contributor to Conde Nast Traveler, GQ, Outside Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine. His writings on a wide and eclectic range of topics have also appeared in Business 2.0, Harper’s Bazaar, Slate, Spin, The New York Observer, Vogue, and Wired among other publications.

Selected Shorts is an award-winning WNYC public radio program featuring the readings of spellbinding short stories by established and emerging writers hosted by Isaiah Sheffer. Symphony Space affirms that, “Whether we present stories around a lively theme, the favorite works of a guest author or a special collaboration with a museum or publication, each Selected Shorts event is a unique night of literature in performance.” Many other stars of the stage and screen have participated in past performances of Selected Shorts such as Michael Cerveris, Stephen Colbert, Mary-Louise Parker, and Denis O’Hare. Publishers Weekly stated that, “These entertaining stories will provide much-needed comic relief to combat winter’s coming chill and other adversities.”

Individual tickets for this event are on sale now and are only $25. Student discounts are available. For more information on Symphony Space, visit www.symphonyspace.org. To learn more about AU PAC’s 2010-2011 season, please visit aupac.adelphi.edu or call the AU PAC Box Office at (516) 877-4000.
