Elmont Memorial Library Hosts Artists Choose Artists Exhibition
An exhibition based on the mentoring of established artists with young community artists
(Long Island, N.Y.) An artist reception will be held at the Elmont Memorial Library on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 2:00 PM to kick off the “Artists Choose Artists” exhibition, which will be on display in the Library’s Gallery during the entire month of April. The exhibition is funded by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.
According to Library Director Maggie Gough, “The Elmont Memorial Library is truly honored to host this unique, local exhibition. The collaborative experience of mentors and students is one that spans all careers and levels of experience. I can think of no better example of what the Library represents: engaging, informing and entertaining our visitors. We welcome the public to take in the creativity expressed in each work of the ‘Artists Choose Artists’ exhibition.”
For six months, ten members of the Long Island Black Artist Association met with ten young community artists weekly to discuss contemporary art; conversations included techniques and aesthetics to issues of gender and diversity. The resulting exhibition includes 10 works — paintings, drawings, prints, collage and string art.
One example of the art produced by the “Artists Choose Artists” program, Siblings Together by Olita J. Jenkins, is attached. Ms. Jenkins, who resides in Hempstead, New York, has been fascinated by art since grade school. After extensive art training at Long Island School of the Arts (formerly BOCES Cultural and Performing Arts Center) in Syosset, NY, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Commercial Design and a Master of Art Education degree from Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.
The exhibition is on loan from Molloy College in Rockville Centre, NY, where it ran from February 6 through March 25, 2011.
