“Gluten And The Brain” Lecture to Focus on Healing a Leaky Gut/Leaky Brain
(Smithtown, NY) Board-certified Chiropractic Neurologist Dr. W. Brent Reynolds is hosting a lecture/taste-testing event for individuals with gluten intolerance or sensitivity and those diagnosed with Celiac Disease. The event, “Gluten and The Brain – How Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance/Sensitivity Can Damage the Brain” will be held May 31, 2012 7:30 pm at Naturally Free Food in Smithtown, NY.
Dr. Reynolds, a specialist in Chiropractic Nutrition and gluten-related disorders, will focus on the neurological effects of gluten, its impacts on the nervous system and the link to other diseases not traditionally attributed to gluten allergies. Attendees will learn the not-so-obvious gluten allergy signs as well as unexpected foods where gluten can hide.
“It is estimated that 1 in 133 people have Celiac Disease. On the local level, the disorder affects 21,000 Long Islanders. While many understand the effect of gluten on the gastrointestinal system from the obvious digestive symptoms, the damage gluten wreaks on the brain is less widely known. Gluten proteins in wheat can form opioid peptides that are similar to addictive morphine-like compounds. Over the long-term, these compounds can damage the brain and complicate disorders such as seizures, Autism, chronic pain, Alzheimer’s, balance problems, and depression. In the short term, gluten re-actions in susceptible people can cause brain fog and fatigue. My goal with this lecture is to enlighten attendees about the neurological effects of gluten and the importance of gluten-free (GF) living.”
Holistic Health Coach JoAnne Romanelli will discuss the practical side of going gluten-free, including how to successfully transition to a GF lifestyle, identifying hidden sources of gluten in prepackaged goods and ensuring GF eating while dining out. Ms. Romanelli, herself gluten-free, will offer tips on healthy meal and snack options as well as how to make gluten substitutions in cooking and baking. Samples of GF foods will be available for taste testing, courtesy of Christine Mitchell, proprietor of Smithtown’s Naturally Free Food.
