The 1920s Will Roar Again in Gatsby-Era Mansion on Huntington Harbor
Â
(Long Island, NY) The public is invited to experience the thrill of the “Roaring 20s” at a “Kick Off the Summer Gatsby-Style” party hosted by the North Shore Promotion Alliance (NSPA) on Thursday, May 17, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Chateau at Coindre Hall, an historic Gold Coast estate, which happens to be celebrating its 100th year.
Â
Founded in 1996, the mission of NSPA is to promote the north shore of Long Island from Great Neck to Port Jefferson. NSPA works closely with the Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Â
NSPA President Gloria Rocchio said the event “will bring together members and Long Island residents for a fun evening to kick off the summer season in a unique waterfront setting — one of the few remaining Gold Coast mansions. It also will be a chance to get acquainted with many of the attractions that make the North Shore one of the country’s premiere summer destinations. We’re telling everyone to throw on their Great Gatsby-era finery or just come as they are.”
Â
The event also kicks off the new Long Island Heritage Trail website, which features Prohibition itineraries and promotes attractions and events on the North Shore.
Â
Many NSPA organizations will have information tables for visitors. The evening will include gangsters and Model A Fords, hors d’oeuvres, “bootleg” wine, “killer cocktails” cash bar, Jazz Age music and dancing with the award-winning Shenole Latimer Band, the Dancin’ Feet Dancers, a Prohibition signature-drink contest, raffle prizes and a 50-50 drawing.
Â
Tickets: $25.00 per person in advance; $30.00 at the door (cash only). RSVP and checks accepted by May 10. Make checks payable to: North Shore Promotion Alliance. History of Coindre Hall
Coindre Hall, a 40-room, 30,000-square-foot mansion on 34 rolling acres on Huntington Harbor, was designed in the style of a medieval French château and built in 1912 for pharmaceutical magnate George McKesson Brown. Brown lost the estate in the 1929 stock market crash. The property was purchased by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, who established a boarding school and summer retreat and named it after their order’s founder, Father André Coindre. The school closed in 1971 and later reopened for a few years as a private school.
Â
Since 1973, the property, now called Chateau at Coindre Hall, has been operated by the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation & Conservation. In1985, Coindre Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and dedicated to the Suffolk County Historic Trust. Today, Coindre Hall is used as a venue for conferences and weddings. Lessing’s has operated this facility since 1995.
