Bringing Queens seniors important tips and techniques for preventing falls
(Queens, NY) Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for seniors, and NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., wants his elder constituents to stay strong on their feet. On Tuesday, May 22, Senator Addabbo and experts from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York will present an important Falls Prevention workshop at the Howard Beach Senior Center.
The free workshop will help seniors identify common situations and activities that can put them at increased risk for dangerous falls. In addition to tips and techniques for avoiding injury, the presentation will provide an opportunity to ask questions about how to assess a home environment for potential fall hazards, how to choose footwear and walking aids that offer increased stability, and how to find local resources that can help seniors build strength and increase stamina.
“Trips and falls are a serious concern among our senior community members,” says Addabbo. “We are very glad that experts from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York have made themselves available to help our residents better understand their risks for falling, and learn what they can do to make their homes safer and prevent falls in their daily routines.”
Led by nationally recognized expert Eileen Bach, DPT, VNSNY’s Director of Rehabilitation Quality Assurance and Education Services, the workshop aims to empower seniors and their family caregivers with knowledge that will keep them safe and confident in their home and community environments.
“Research tells us that 1 in 3 adults over the age of 65 will suffer a serious fall this year, and 70% of those falls will occur in the home,” says Dr. Bach. “What’s more, the CDC estimates that every hour there are two deaths and more than 250 emergency room visits for falls-related injuries among older people. Senator Addabbo’s concern for his constituents is well placed—we’re looking forward to sharing our tips and techniques with those who attend the workshop.”
