Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program Receives Grant from Komen Greater New York City Affiliate to provide support services to underserved minority women diagnosed with breast cancer

(Long Island, NY) The Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $96,870 grant to the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program to provide bilingual social work services to vulnerable women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and to their family members.

The grant from Komen Greater NYC supports the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s collaboration with Nassau University Medical Center, an initiative, which addresses disparities in healthcare by providing services and support to women following an abnormal mammogram through diagnosis and treatment. The program will involve providing on-site Social Work services in the Breast and Oncology Clinics at Nassau University Medical Center, offering concrete and support services and facilitation of appropriate referrals to community agencies, which will assist the patients in meeting their diverse needs.

“This grant enables us to serve the most vulnerable women diagnosed with breast cancer by providing bilingual social work services where these women are being treated,” said Hillary Rutter, director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and the Greater New York City Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.

“At the Komen Greater NYC Affiliate, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered the lack of support services to underserved minority women diagnosed with breast cancer on Long Island,” said Anita R. McFarlane, MPH, Komen Greater NYC Director of Grants & Public Policy. “We are confident that through the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s interventions, underserved minority women diagnosed with breast cancer, will receive the support services that they need and deserve.”
