Says Suffolk County is ready for a government that answers to the residents, and not just special interests
(Long Island, NY) Southampton Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming (D-Noyac) will run for the 1stState Senate district in the upcoming election. Fleming pointed to Long Island’s economic turmoil and poisonous political atmosphere as reasons she decided to run during her announcement today in Southampton.
In an online video statement at www.flemingforsenate.com, Fleming states, “the economic turmoil and the environmental threats of recent years have been difficult, but they present us with a unique and powerful opportunity. Business as usual does not work. It doesn’t work for Long Island families, and it won’t leave our kids with the Long Island they deserve to inherit – full of promise and with a healthy economy.”
“I’m running for State Senate to make sure our kids have the same access to quality schools, job opportunities and a healthy environment as my husband and I enjoyed when we moved to the East End more than ten years ago,” Fleming added.
“When I took my place on the Southampton Town Board, I faced the deeply rooted partisan politics that frustrate all of us. But, as a professional mediator, I have worked with my colleagues to find common ground to get things done. During my tenure on the board, we brought Southampton out of deficit and restored our damaged credit rating.”
“Here in Suffolk County, our natural environment is critical to our economic health. That’s why I am proud to have spearheaded a program to buy land for conservation without burdening taxpayers as well as train young people in sustainable building trades to build energy efficient housing on blighted land.”
“For years, I have watched as politicians and special interests have played games in Albany to the detriment of our local economy. My opponent has been in office for 35 years and is currently running for his 19th term in the state senate. If we want to break from the scandal and dysfunction that has gripped Albany for years, we need to elect new representation here at home.”
Fleming said, “ I’m running for office because our kids deserve better. Suffolk County is ready for fresh new leadership in the New York State Senate. Suffolk County is ready for its first female Senator. I’m convinced that none of the challenges ahead are too big if we work together, exchange ideas, and put aside partisan politics to find our common ground”.
Bridget Fleming was elected in 2010 to the Southampton Town Board, and reelected as the top vote getter in 2012. She currently serves as liaison to Southampton’s Police Department, Housing Authority, Department of Municipal Works, Animal Shelter, the Agriculture Advisory Committee and the Green Committee. A graduate of Hunter College’s Special Honors Curriculum, and the University of Virginia School of Law, where she received the prestigious Kramer award for service to the community, Bridget served for almost a decade as an Assistant District Attorney under the legendary Robert Morgenthau, in the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit, and later as Chief of the Welfare Fraud Unit, devoted to the prevention, investigation and prosecution of fraud in public programs. In addition to her tireless work on the Town Board, Bridget has run a Matrimonial and Family Law practice on Main Street in Sag Harbor, and is a professional mediator. A resident of Noyac since 2001, Bridget lives with her husband Robert Agoglia, a general contractor, their nine-year old son Jai who attends Sag Harbor Elementary School, and Dune, the family’s Springer Spaniel.
