Legislation lets towns establish and extend watershed-protection improvement districts
(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Dean Murray’s (R,C-East Patchogue) today announced that legislation he co-sponsored allowing towns to develop watershed-protection improvement districts passed the Assembly.
The bill, which was sponsored by fellow Suffolk County Assemblyman Fred Thiele, allows town boards to establish or extend watershed-protection improvement districts in order to protect residents living near watersheds from pollution and contamination. The bill now goes to the Senate, where it is sponsored by Senator Ken LaValle.
“Our shorelines, rivers and watersheds are crucial to our communities on Long Island,” said Murray. “We need to preserve the delicate balance between environmental protection and economic development of our watershed. This legislation allows our towns to govern and maintain these regions, preserving the integrity of our water supplies and the health of all Long Islanders.”
