   Altschuler Honors Flag Day

Long Island Press Releases & News

Self-made businessman and Republican congressional candidate Randy Altschuler observed Flag Day today

(Long Island, NY) Urging fellow Long Islanders from across the political spectrum to spend a moment today reflecting on our nation’s flag and all those who have so fervently defended it throughout history, self-made businessman and Republican congressional candidate Randy Altschuler observed Flag Day today.

The first Flag Day observance was held by a 19-year old grade school teacher in Wisconsin named Bernard Cigrand on June 14, 1885, commemorating Congress’ adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777.  On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of Flag Day.  He was followed by President Truman signing an Act of Congress designating the 14th day of June every year as National Flag Day in 1949.

“Today, we should all honor the stars and stripes, and everything good and decent that it symbolizes and stands for here and around the world,” said Altschuler.  “We should also pay our deepest respects to the men and women who have given their lives to defend our flag and our freedoms throughout the course of history.  As the grandson of Polish immigrants who came to New York looking for a better life, I could not be more proud to be an American and live in the greatest country on earth.”
