Team Half Penny Pub Set to Participate
(Long Island, NY) Alzheimer’s Association Long Island has announced that Team Half Penny Pub in Bay Shore will take part in the East End Walk to End Alzheimer’s on August 25. This is the team’s first-ever Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Team Half Penny Pub Team has raised $2,500 thus far for the East End Walk. To raise the money, they sold 350 of AALI’s “Forget Me Nots” at its Bay Shore and Sayville locations which currently adorn the establishment’s walls, held 50/50 raffles and pizza parties and placed donation jars at the 7-Eleven in Ronkonkoma and the American Veterans Hall in Bay Shore.
The team members are comprised of Ed Lawrence, Manager, Half Penny Pub; Annie Castillo, Mr. Lawrence’s sister and her husband, Anthony Castillo. They formed the team in honor of Ed and Annie’s father, Al Lawrence, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.
There are currently 5.4 million people in the U.S. who are afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Of that number, 60,000 live on Long Island. In the coming years, the Association expects to see a drastic increase in these numbers if a cure is not found. Currently, one in eight people over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s disease.
