(Rockville Centre, NY) Daniel G. Murphy, MD, MBA, has been named Chief of Emergency Medicine at Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS) and will serve as Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip. Dr. Murphy comes to his new post from Mercy Medical Center, Rockville Centre, where he served as Director of Emergency Services.
 
A native of Brooklyn, Dr. Murphy’s career has brought him to the nation’s busiest emergency rooms and included clinical, research, academic and administrative roles. After graduating from Georgetown University, Dr. Murphy earned a medical degree from the Chicago Medical School. He then completed residency training in emergency medicine at Cook County Hospital, where he later became an attending physician and associate director of research.
 
“At Cook County I fell in love with emergency medicine,” he recalled. “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”
 
Dr. Murphy returned to the New York area after being named medical director and later vice-chair of the department of emergency medicine at Maimonides Medical Center, a position he held for eight years before joining Mercy Medical Center.
 
In 2003, Dr. Murphy earned an MBA from Hofstra University. The following year he became president of Long Island Emergency Care, PC, a group of emergency physicians and hospitalists contracted to provide services to Mercy Medical Center.
 
In his new role as chairman of one of Long Island’s busiest emergency departments, with close to 100,000 patient visits each year, Dr. Murphy has a number of priority items on his agenda.
 
“I plan to focus on patient flow, patient satisfaction, and assuring continued excellence in emergency care provided at Good Samaritan and across the CHSLI system,” he said.
 
Dr. Murphy is presently serving as President of the New York Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and is Chair of its Government Affairs Committee. He also serves as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
 
He has presented lectures and research at national and regional professional meetings and has written or co-written textbook chapters and research studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Among his honors, Dr. Murphy was named 2010 Physician of the Year by the New York State Society of Physician Assistants, 2010 honoree of the Executive MBA Group of Long Island, and 2010 honoree of the Friends of Mercy Medical Center St. Patrick’s Dinner.
 
Dr. Murphy and his wife, Marie, reside in Garden City with their four children, Meaghan, 23; Erin, 21; Brynne, 18; and John, 12.
 
Dr. Murphy is the son of the late John J. Murphy. His mother is Joan Logan Murphy who presently lives in Breezy Point.
