USDAN CENTER EXTENDS ARTISTIC FOCUS WITH NEW COURSE: FASHION DESIGN OPEN HOUSES FOR SUMMER 2009: Sundays: November 2, January 11, March 15, and Wednesday February 18
Usdan Center For the Creative and Performing Arts, American?s premier summer arts day camp, expands its artistic focus further for 2009, offering a new course, Fashion Design. Open to students in grades 9 to 12, the program will cover the basic components and terminology relating to design, drawing techniques, the historical and cultural background of fashion, and an introduction to the fashion design business. Each student will have ample opportunity to create original designs. The goal is to provide each student with a fashion portfolio by the end of the course, which includes original designs in a variety of media. The instructor will be Allison Solomon, who teaches fashion design at Manhattan?s East Side Middle School. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com) is celebrating its 41st Season as America?s premier summer arts day camp, and has announced Open House dates for its 2009 summer season. Open Houses will be held on Sundays, November 2, 2008; January 11, 2009; March 15, 2009; and on Wednesday February 18, 2009. All will take place between 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. They will give prospective students and their families a chance to tour Usdan?s magnificent 200- acre woodland setting in Huntington, Long Island, and to obtain information and answers to questions from the Center?s staff. In addition to the official Open House dates, Usdan is open year- round Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Interested families may make an appointment to visit during those hours. The Center is located at 185 Colonial Springs Road, Wheatley Heights, Long Island, NY 11798. The phone number for an appointment is: (631)643-7900. Usdan Center has introduced the arts to more than 50,000 Tri-State Area children since it founding in 1968.. The Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18. No audition is needed for most programs, rather admission is based on an expression of interest in the arts. Each summer, 1,600 students are transported to the Center in air-conditioned buses each day. There are 40+ programs to choose from, including music, dance, theater, film & video, chess, writing, nature & ecology, and media arts. One-third of Usdan?s students attend on scholarship. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey, actress Natalie Portman, and members of major music, theater, and dance ensembles. In addition to its regular programs, Usdan offers special opportunities for advanced high school-age performing and visual artists. These include Music Staff Internships, a Summer Ballet Intensive, and a year-round program of immersion in the visual arts for selected high school students, the Usdan Honors Art Collective. The Collective, open to talented art students in grades 9 to 11, begins at Usdan Center during the summer, and continues through the following May with bi-weekly meetings at Usdan, and at New York?s great museums and galleries. For more information on all of the above programs, call the Center at (631) 643-7900, or at (212) 772-6060, or visit www.usdan.com. ###
