Long Island Lizards
In the MLL's inaugural season in 2001, the Lizards played their first two seasons at Hofstra Stadium. They have won American Division championships in 2001, 2002, and 2003, and Major League Lacrosse titles in 2001 and 2003. The team made the playoffs in 2005 as a wildcard despite a losing record. They brought the popular sport of lacrosse to the professional ranks and look to build on their success when their season starts in May. The Lizards also feature some of the best lacrosse players in the world. They have recently come off a five-game win streak and are making a strong case for an Eastern Conference playoff spot. In fact, Lizard’s star player Vlahakis was named a 2008 MLL All-star and has won the Defensive Player of the Week Award a record 4 times this season. The Long Island Lizards normally hold clinics which help young children to develop their skills and talent in playing lacrosse. The team came to Oyster Bay High School to instruct the local players in the basics of the game. The clinic was open to both boys and girls from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Players taught the students the proper technique for shooting while they instructed on ground balls and the importance of Wall Ball. This is where players from youth leagues to the pros work on their shots, catches and overall technique by taking plentiful shots against a wall with both their strong and weak hands. The CATZ of Long Island helps the Long Island Lizards especially on their performance training program that meets the needs of each player for the demands of their sport. During the Lizards camp, CATZ will be running the warm-up session at the start of the day, as well as exact strength and conditioning program to close-out each day of the camp. They also developed a number of dynamic warm-up exercises to motivate sport-specific movements; as well as having a renowned sport-specific strength and conditioning program that incorporates flexibility, agility, stamina, power, strength and speed to help improve an athlete’s on-field performance. Hopefully, the Lizards will do their best to add more titles in upcoming Major League Lacrosse seasons. For more information please visit: www.longislandlizards.com |
