The New York Jets
The team first began as a charter member of the American Football League under the name 'New York Titans' in 1960. After three years, the team was bought by the vice president of the Music Corporation of America named David A. "Sonny" Werblin from its original owner Harry Wismer. Then, he changed the teams name to the Jets and drafted Matt Snell in the first round, signing him away from the New York Giants. Werblin's success was a contributing factor to the NFL's merger with the AFL. However he and the Oakland Raiders Al Davis strongly resisted the indemnity the NFL demanded, of $100,000 per year for twenty years. During the 1968 season, Werblin was fired by Jets management, which concluded with the team winning Super Bowl III over the Baltimore Colts in one of the greatest upsets in sports history. Speculations had been spread throughout the area involving a certain sports columnist Jerry Izenberg who believed that there was a "Curse of Sonny Werblin" on the team. However, since the firing took place before the great victory, this seems to be an insufficient explanation for the Jets' inability to reach the Super Bowl since that game on January 12, 1969. The jets defense is known to be a superhighway for opposing running backs, and no other team had more success than they achieved. The team has undergone different kinds of jersey styles and also their respective colors. The team's original logo consisted of a green airplane with the word "JETS" written on its side. It was changed to a football shaped oval with the letters "NY" superimposed, and superimposed over that, both the word "JETS" and a football in green. The Jets wore the navy and gold uniforms during the celebration of their heritage the "Titans Throwback Day". It also honors the four original Titans who played as Jets in Super Bowl III. After the early 1990's, they were led back to championship contention under head coach Bill Parcells. He guided the Jets most successful post-merger season in 1998, finishing 12-4 and reaching the AFC Championship Game, where they fell to the Denver Broncos.
