Aquebogue is a hamlet and census-designated place located in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. It is in the northeast part of the Town of Riverhead. The neighborhood is part of Long Island's North Fork wine region and is home to such wineries as Paumanouk Vineyards. It is run and owned by an Old World family which they produce Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet and other fine wines, from a spread of 77 acres of prime farmland. As of the 2000 census, there were 2,254 people, 872 households, and 629 families residing in the CDP. The median income for a household in the CDP was $54,453, and the median income for a family was $60,375. Males had a median income of $38,776 and only $37,750 for females. The neighborhood name derives from Algonquian for headwater. It came from a Native American word meaning “head of the bay”. According to the famous researchers in New York, there was only one registered sex offender living in Aquebogue in early 2007.
