EAST SETAUKET, LONG ISLAND

East Setauket, Long Island

East Setauket is a hamlet and census-designated place located in Suffolk County, on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. It is within the Town of Brookhaven. The Greater Setauket area comprises East and South Setauket, the village of Poquott as well as Strong's Neck, a peninsula that juts into Conscience Bay and Setauket Harbor. The three major east-west roads are Route 25A, Route 347 and Sheep Pasture Road. Setauket is accessible from the Long Island Expressway via EXIT 62. As of the 2000 census, there were 15,931 people, 5,521 households, and 4,289 families residing in the CDP. The median income for a household in the CDP was $86,986, and the median income for a family was $102,472. Males had a median income of $70,276 and only $41,281 for females. The latitude of East Setauket is 40.941N. The longitude is -73.106W. It is in the Eastern Standard time zone. Elevation is 66 feet.

In 1650s, the community was first settled by Europeans. During the American Revolutionary War, the Culper Spy Ring headed by Benjamin Tallmadge passed information about British troop movements gathered in New York City to George Washington. The Battle of Setauket was fought here in 1777. According to the famous researchers in New York, there were no registered sex offender living in this place in early 2007 which makes East Setauket a very safe to live.

Some notable residents (former and recent) in East Setauket include Bud Abbott (comedian), Ray Anderson (jazz musician), Vince Clemente (poet), Amy Goodman (journalist), Rudolph Migliore (attorney), and William Sydney Mount (painter). The racial-makeup of the area comprises of 87.76% White, 1.27% African American, 0.17% Native American, 8.80% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. There are a large number of medical and professional offices on Belle Meade along with other stores that service them. The rest of Setauket is residential except for schools. There is a blathering of shops and factories spread out over Setauket set up before modern zoning rules went into effect. The community is served by Three Village Central School Districts consisting of five elementary schools, two junior high schools, and Ward Melville High School. Each of these has impressive credentials. The Emma S. Clark Library which opened in 1892 offers a various kind of books, movies and meeting space and is considered a community treasure. It also offers access to computers with word processors and internet access. The library is certified by the State of New York and is non-profit. Other historical attractions include The Thompson House on North Country Road, constructed in 1700 displays some collections of early Long Island furniture. Various house styles can be found in East Setauket including Colonials, ranch styles, Victorians as well as some capes, split-levels and contemporaries.
