Farmingdale, Long Island
On October 18, 1695, an Englishman name Thomas Powell purchased a 15 square mile tract of land from Massapeque Indians including Farmingdale as well as neighboring communities such as Bethpage, Melville, and Plainview. During that time, he and his family divided the land into lots and started more than a dozen decades of agriculture in the area. Hardscrabble was the former name of the area and changed it to Farmingdale in 1845. The village became incorporated in 1904. After the World War II, many establishments were constructed and their industrialization boomed. In fact, Farmingdale became a locus for the aircraft industry, notably, Republic Aviation Company. The American Airpower Museum should figure on the top of the list of any person on a quick visit, for it is so inextricably linked with the history of Farmingdale.
