Malverne, Long Island

Malverne is a hamlet located in Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is within the Town of Hempstead and the county seat is Mineola. As of 2000 census, there were 8,934 people, 3,106 households, and 2,534 families residing in the area. Most of the resident’s ancestries were Italian, Irish, German, English, and Polish. Malverne is only a 45 minute ride from the heart of New York City. The median income for a household in the village was $81,784, and the median income for a family was $87,197. Males had a median income of $53,077 and only $37,743 for females. The latitude of Malverne is 40.678N. The longitude is -73.674W. It is in the Eastern Standard time zone. Elevation is 36 feet.

The area was first settled by the Rockaway Indians whose lands extended over a good part of present day Queens and Nassau. They were known for their skill in making wampum from shells. Due to its land fertility, farming became their way of living. Aside from this, there were a number of other businesses in Malverne, including a wheelwright shop, a grist mill, several general stores, a greenhouse, a small hotel and a tavern. The former and merged names include Norwood and Norwood Station and were changed to Malverne because the Village of Norwood already existed in upstate New York. The community was named after a village in England. On April 13, 1921, the area’s incorporation was finalized that it acted as a village since a year. Malverne has celebrated the 1921 anniversary at the 25-year, 50-year, and 75-year. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many of Malverne homes were built and some of the familiar streets of Malverne resulting their names from early families such as the Cornwells, the Riders, the Wicks, and the Nostrands.

The village is governed by a Mayor and their Board of Trustees. It is publicly served by its own Police Department, Volunteer Fire Department (Norwood Hook, Ladder & Hose Company), Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Police Reserve, and other government sectors. Malverne has been also home to many notable residents like Fran Purcell (former Nassau County Executive), Ralph Penza (WNBC-TV news reporter and anchor), Tony Danza (actor and former boxer), and many more.

The Malverne Union Free School District provides opportunities for educational development from full-day Kindergarten classes through high school. It offers good educational programs encourage each student to attain their goal. The Malverne Public Library has a Genealogy Research Databases apart from the usual resources, materials and facilities. The Little League’s Opening Day is still one of the biggest events in the village. It is established as a way of honoring the 2.7 million “everyday” players in Little Leagues around the world and the more than one million volunteers who help them play. Malverne has it all that residents enjoy the variety of sports, restaurants, night life, schools, museums, and entertainment as well.
