NORTH BABYLON, LONG ISLAND

North Babylon, Long Island

North Babylon is a hamlet and census-designated place located in Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It is within the Town of Babylon. North Babylon is known a family-oriented community where Little League and high school football games be given a lot of attention. As of the 2000 census, there were 17,877 people, 6,146 households, and 4,707 families residing in the CDP. The median income for a household in the hamlet was $64,128, and the median income for a family was $69,714. Males had a median income of $45,651 and only $33,419 for females. The latitude of North Babylon is 40.716N. The longitude is -73.322W. It is in the Eastern Standard time zone. Elevation is 23 feet.

In an area originally named South Deer Park, the community was once a simple agricultural economy until some rich people especially August Belmont, assumed large tracts of land for mansions and horse breeding. Yachting and fishing have been traditional sports which the area developed such a reputation that even President Chester A. Arthur was tempted to make a visit. North Babylon was a key strategic and logistics post during World War 1. It has grown from strength to strength with the passage of each decade, but has always kept some of its original and rural charm. According to the research conducted in town, there were only two registered sex offenders living in North Babylon in early 2007. The ratio of number of residents in North Babylon to the number of sex offenders is 8939 to 1. The number of registered sex offenders compared to the number of residents in this place is a lot smaller than the state average.

Well-known resident’s living in North Babylon includes August Belmont, financier and breeder of race horses. The racial-makeup comprises of 92.05% White, 2.08% African American, 0.17% Native American, 2.09% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.95% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. Most of its resident’s ancestries were Italian, Irish, German, Polish, and English. The community is served by North Babylon Union Free School District which has five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district helps every student in learning and builds their character, fostering their creativity, in order to become productive and thoughtful citizens of a nation. It also runs extremely well and children and schools are regularly selected for awards. The North Babylon Teachers Organization plays a pro-active and constructive role in supporting children and interface with the parent community. The Belmont Lake State Park is one of the famous attractions in town. The park has its own recreational facilities including courts for a host of ball games, horse shoes areas and play grounds as well for smaller children.
