Roosevelt, Long Island
The hamlet was named after President Theodore Roosevelt. The former and merged names include Greenwich Point and Rum Point. Roosevelt was among of the few communities to accept black residents during the building boom after World War II. According to the famous researchers in New York, there were 13 registered sex offenders living in Roosevelt in early 2007. The ratio of number of residents in Roosevelt to the number of sex offenders is 1220 to 1. There are several famous residents living in Roosevelt such as Julius Erving (basketball player), Howard Stern (radio host), Eddie Murphy (comedian and actor), Carlton Douglas (rapper and political activist), and John Mackey (National Football League Hall of Fame member). The hamlet’s racial-makeup comprises of 3.97% White, 89.02% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 8.33% from other races, and 3.69% from two or more races. Most of its resident’s ancestries were Black or African American, West Indian (excluding Hispanic groups), Jamaican, Central American, and Salvadoran. The community is served by Roosevelt Union Free School District which has four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The town has also a number of private pre-kindergarten establishments as well. Every effort is made to prepare children for a decade of learning before they complete the first five years of their lives. The Roosevelt public library has full selections of books, magazines, newspapers, and community publications. It also has a special collection of Black Heritage resources and a bank of 10 public access computers to the internet. Roosevelt is home to United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County which provides programs and services to people who have developmental disabilities. The area has plenty of sports and recreation venues including Pool on Hart Avenue, Centennial Park, and Roosevelt Park. The park has court games, athletics, fishing, and bike paths apart from all the features of the Centennial. Roosevelt also offers a variety of services, eateries, and houses of worship.
