Gilding the Coasts: Art and Design of Long Island’s Great Estate Era @ Long Island Museum
Jun 26 – Oct 25 all-day

From the late 1870s until the World War II years, well over 1,000 estates were built across Nassau and Suffolk counties, thoroughly reshaping the lives of wealthy and working-class residents alike. These palaces and properties of diverse design represented the country’s best achievements in architecture, interior decorating, and landscape design. Gilding the Coasts: The Art & Design of Long Island’s Great Estates will explore the collaborative efforts, fertile creativity, and innovative work that were critical ingredients forging Long Island’s great estates.

The exhibition will emphasize artistic production, in both the significant path-breaking work that was done on estates by a wide array of artisans, and in the art that was commissioned and inspired by the great estate movement itself. Artifact-rich case studies of specific Long Island estates will include architect Stanford White’s house Box Hill, in St. James; artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany’s magnificent Laurelton Hall, in Cold Spring Harbor; and muralist and canvas painter William de Leftwich Dodge’s Villa Francesca, in Setauket. In each instance, these residences moved beyond their use as country home retreats for restful entertaining. From their conception to their meticulous design, construction, and eventual daily use, these were fascinating working laboratories that facilitated the extension of their owner’s innovative artistic legacies.

Gin Blossoms @ The Paramount
Jul 10 @ 8:00 pm

gin blossoms

For more than two decades, Gin Blossoms have defined the sound of jangle pop. From their late 80s start as Arizona’s top indie rock outfit, the Tempe-based combo has drawn critical applause and massive popular success for their trademark brand of chiming guitars, introspective lyricism, and irresistible melodies. Gin Blossoms soon unfurled a chain of crossover favorites spanning five different formats, from “Hey Jealousy” and “Until I Fall Away” to “Follow You Down” and the GRAMMY®-nominated “As Long As It Matters,” earning the band sales in excess of 10 million in the US alone.

“It’s a really rare thing,” singer/guitarist Robin Wilson says of Gin Blossoms’ continuing saga. “So many chapters in this long story.”
Wilson, guitarist Jesse Valenzuela, and bassist Bill Leen co-founded Gin Blossoms in 1987 and quickly became the toast of the Grand Canyon State’s local scene. Blending an array of influences – from The Beatles and The Byrds to The Band and The Buckaroos – with pure pop songwriting and their own post-adolescent energy, the band hit upon a truly thrilling sonic approach that instantly set them at the forefront of the always-adventurous American underground.

soja

“I want to speak for people who don’t have microphones,” Jacob Hemphill says. “Our goal as a band is to stick up for the human race. We see the world and we try to make it better in the limited time we have here.”

This is the philosophy behind SOJA’s music, a simple statement that has driven the D.C. area band, who blend reggae, go-go, D.C. hardcore, Latin, rock and hip-hop. Originally formed by a group of friends while still in middle school and has built a massive, dedicated fanbase around the world since. In the years following, SOJA has sold more than 200,000 albums, headlined shows in over 20 countries around the world, generated nearly 4 million Facebook fans, and over 90 million YouTube views. The band has toured with Dave Matthews Band, Incubus, 311 and appeared at major festivals including Bonnaroo where they attract an almost Grateful Dead-like international fan base along the way, with caravans of diehards following them from city to city. After the release of their 2012 album Strength To Survive, the musicians started writing material for what would become their fifth full-length album, “Amid the Noise and Haste.”

Toad the Wet Sprocket @ The Paramount
Jul 16 @ 8:00 pm

toadthewetsprocket

When Monty Python’s Eric Idle created the fictional band “Toad the Wet Sprocket” for the program “Rutland Weekend Television” in 1975, he never dreamed that anyone would actually use such a silly name. Fast forward to 1986, when four California teens desperately needed to come up with a name to call their band for an upcoming gig at a Goleta, CA watering hole called The Shack.

Since that day, “Toad the Wet Sprocket” has been the name of the four piece California rock band consisting of lead singer Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss. From 1989-1998, they made 5 studio albums which combined sold over four million copies, had five major radio hits, and won over audiences across North America and Europe.
