An East End Arts Gallery Show, Juried by Artist Frank Wimberley; Show Dates: January 18 – March 8, 2013; Opening Reception: Friday, February 1, 5-7 PM
(Riverhead, N.Y.) –– The East End Arts Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming juried, all media art show, Diversity, at the East End Arts Gallery which will be up for viewing starting Friday, January 18. The guest juror for this show is internationally renowned artist, Frank Wimberley. The show will run through March 8, 2013, with a reception on Friday, February 1, from 5 PM until 7 PM. The reception is a free event, open to the public; refreshments will be served. The East End Arts Gallery is located at 133 East Main Street in Riverhead, NY and open hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 AM to 4 PM.
This art show is in conjunction with a sister show exploring a similar theme to be held at the Suffolk County Historical Society, Hidden & Forbidden: Objects and Art of Intolerance, with a reception the same evening as East End Arts’: Friday, February 1, from 6 PM to 8 PM. The Suffolk County Historical Society is located at 300 West Main Street in Riverhead, NY.
For over 40 years, guest juror Frank Wimberley has been regarded as one of the preeminent artists on the East End. In the tradition of those wildly creative abstract expressionists who made this tip of Long Island famous as the birthplace of so much bold and courageous non-representative painting, Wimberley shows us again and again that color and composition and texture and style can not only be arrestingly beautiful, but in skillful hands can even convey nuanced emotion.
Gallery Director Jane Kirkwood encourages artists to “embrace the ways in which you are personally different and use any visual art form to explore it.” Original works in all media that explore diversity, be it culturally, socially, religiously, psychologically, etc. may be submitted. For entry information and complete drop-off schedule, visit: http://eastendarts.org/Temp2013/DiversityProsp.pdf.
The “Best in Show” winner of the Diversity Show will be one of several artists who will participate in the East End Arts Gallery’s Winners’ Show in the Fall of 2014. First, Second, Third Place, and Honorable Mentions will also be awarded.
The Diversity Show is the first of seven art shows of 2013 at the East End Arts Gallery, under the umbrella theme “Celebrating Our Diversity”. For the full 2013 Gallery Schedule and more details, visit http://eastendarts.org/Temp2013/2013GALLERYSched.pdf.
East End Arts Diversity Statement
Diversity (the state or fact of being different) may be challenging in the more conventional areas of life, but in the arts being different is cherished, nourished and encouraged. East End Arts knows the diversity of our community is a fundamental strength of our region. We believe when diversity is embraced as a value and practice both the artist and the arts flourish. To make diversity a core and abiding strength is our immediate goal. East End Arts looks forward to welcoming, supporting, advocating for and inspiring new artists willing to explore their own diverse identities. It’s our mission and our privilege.
Programs at the East End Arts Gallery are made possible by public funds from the New York State Council of the Arts, Suffolk County under the auspices of the Office of Cultural Affairs, County Executive Steve Bellone, and the Town of Riverhead.
