(Long Island, NY) A Suffolk County jury this afternoon convicted a man of beating a man to death outside the Fiesta Pool Hall in Brentwood in June of 2011.

The trial of Jairon A. Gonzales-Martinez, 24, of 10 Orient Ave., began March 26 before Judge Mark Cohen in Riverhead. The jury deliberated six hours over two days before convicting Gonzales-Martinez of second degree murder in the death of Rumaldo Bethancourt-Lopez, 29, of Brentwood.
The defendant was also found guilty of Gang Assault, Assault 2nd degree and one count of first degree assault, the latter charge for seriously injuring another man, Ramiro Garcia, 33, of Central Islip, who was hospitalized for head injuries.
“This defendant used a pipe for his brutal, unprovoked attack on two defenseless victims, killing one and beating the other man so severely he was in a coma when taken to the hospital,” DA Spota said. “We will recommend that he be sentenced to the maximum term of imprisonment in an upstate correctional facility.”
The defendant’s sentencing is scheduled for May 22, 2013.
