In a May 29th letter to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, Lafazan argued that launching a 65-and-over senior discount program would help locals who rely on taxis and public transportation to make ends meet and remain on Long Island. Especially, in the midst of federal tax law changes that greatly curtail state and local tax deductions available to many New Yorkers.
“One of the most pressing issues in the 18th district is transportation – especially for senior citizens,” Lafazan wrote to Khosrowshahi. “Public transportation is sorely lacking throughout Nassau County and many residents in my district lack public bus transportation altogether. While dedicated senior transportation does exist in the Town of Oyster Bay, many of my constituents on the north shore lack access to this vital service.
With communities all over Long Island lacking adequate sidewalks and safe pedestrian crossings, the ability to travel by car is sometimes a matter of life and death.”
Legislator Lafazan said he also plans to contact leaders at Lyft, Via and other ride-sharing platforms to pitch the concept.
