Contest offers nearly $20,000 in prizes to winning artists who capture Nassau County’s response to Superstorm Sandy
(Long Island, NY) This week invited artists from throughout Nassau County to participate in an open art competition that allows them to create a permanent tribute to the spirit of all county residents who have endured the wrath of Superstorm Sandy.
The winners will be chosen by a group of judges and will receive prize awards funded from a private source. First prize will be a $10,000 cash award; Second prize will be $5,000 and Third prize is $2,500. There will also be Honorable Mention awards of $1,000 each.
Artwork work will be on display at the County’s Office of Emergency Management during 2013, according to Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano.
“Every crisis, every storm and every natural disaster provides all of us with the ability to call upon our inner strength to begin the job of recovery,” he said.“I invite residents to create and submit a work of art that captures the resilience of Nassau County’s storm survivors, the role of our first responders and our county’s commitment to rebuilding.”
Nassau residents Lawrence and Susan Kadish, artists and longtime supporters of the arts, helped create and financially support this effort.
The competition is open to Nassau County residents of all ages. The deadline for submissions is September 1st and all accepted submissions will be placed on public display by Nassau County for a period of approximately six months. Artists wishing to submit their work will need to submit a photo of their effort along with dimensions of the art to a preliminary review board. For complete information on submission rules governing this competition, go to the County’s website www.nassaucountyny.gov or call 516-571-6000.
