Lindenhurst Disaster Recovery Center Moves to Copiague Library
(Hauppauge, NY) The Disaster Recovery Center located at the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, 1 Lee Avenue in Lindenhurst, NY, 11757, will end service at that location at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 23, and will reopen at 9 a.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at the Copiague Memorial Public Library, 50 Deauville Blvd., Copiague, NY, 11726.
The center’s hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Statement from Long Island Power Authority in Response to Newsday Article
(Long Island, NY) The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) issued a statement in response to the Newsday article that ran today about LIPA’s contracts being reviewed.
“LIPA has a rigorous procurement process that exceeds the requirements under state law and believes all of its contracts are in its customers’ best interest. LIPA’s contracts have been subject to numerous layers of review, approval, oversight and audit by various state, federal and other entities over the years, including LIPA’s Board of Trustees, the Attorney General, the State Comptroller, the Public Authorities Control Board, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. LIPA’s contracts and business practices have also been subject to various audits over the years, not only by the State Comptroller, but by other independent experts, many of which have been conducted at LIPA’s request in the ordinary course. LIPA is continually focused on ensuring that its contracts have been executed with the goal of providing the best value for its customers, and although LIPA did not request any additional review at this time, we welcome any opportunity to demonstrate the integrity of our procurement process and contracts.”
LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric provider, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the 2nd largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, 3rd largest in terms of customers served and the 7th largest in terms of electricity delivered. In 2011, LIPA outperformed all other overhead electric utilities in New York State for frequency and duration of service interruptions. Senator LaValle Presents Liberty Award to Dedicated Hospital Staffers
(Southampton, NY) David Lopez, Director of Facilities Management and Engineering, and his staff of 13 at Southampton Hospital, were awarded a New York State Senate Liberty Award, by New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today.
One of the highest civilian honors that New Yorker’s can receive, the Liberty Award was created in 2000 and is presented to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers. The Hospital department was recognized for its 24/7 dedication during Hurricane Sandy to maintain electrical power critical to keeping Hospital patients safe.

Beloved Restaurant Will Once Again Act as Unofficial Gathering Spot for Annual Parade
(Center Moriches, NY) – On Sunday March 10, 2013 when the Chamber of Commerce of the Moriches presents their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade featuring Grand Marshal Edward Morris Sr, one of the main attractions for residents and tourists alike will be local area mainstay, Sea Cove Restaurant.
This year as in years past, the owners of the legendary establishment will once again be feeding patrons FREE corn beef and cabbage and will be featuring some of the best and brightest micro breweries that Long Island has to offer (including Blue Point, Long Ireland and others) on their famous Beer Truck. Recently, Chef Joseph LoMonaco, who is best known for his work at Villa Monaco of West Islip and Lomonacos of Centereach, brought his talents to the historic Sea Cove Restaurant, located at 361 Main Street in Center Moriches, NY with spectacular results. Built between 1873 and 1888, 361 Main Street has been a landmark building for local residents and travelers through the “Gateway to the Hampton’s” to eat, drinks and gather for over 125 years, including the very first and forever famous Sweezy & Newins Co., as well as the locally loved Sunrise Diner and for the last 30 or so years, as the still popular Sea Cove Restaurant.

Bellone Calls for Nominations for Senior Citizen of the Year
(Hauppauge, NY) County Executive Bellone and the Suffolk County Senior Citizen Advisory Board is pleased to announce that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging is now accepting nominations for the Senior Citizen of the Year Award. This award recognizes a senior citizen who has significantly contributed to other seniors in a meaningful and important way, either as an advocate, role model, leader, or volunteer. This impact can be felt either countywide, or in one of the local communities.
Nominations should be made on the attached form and must include the nominee’s name, address, and phone number, along with why you are nominating this person for this award. Candidates must be 60 years of age or older and a resident of Suffolk County. Nominations should be mailed or faxed to:
Employees of federal, state, county or local municipalities engaged in providing services to senior citizens are not eligible. Previous award recipients are also not eligible. Nominations must be received no later than Thursday, March 14, 2013.

Annual Program Honors Women’s Contributions to Our Community

Assemblyman Ed Ra presenting a proclamation to members of the H. Frank Carey PTSA
(Long Island, NY) Assemblymen Ed Ra (R-19th District) recently met with several members of the H. Frank Carey High School PTSA and presented them an official proclamation in honor of their outstanding work over the past year. Each individual member of the PTSA also received an official citation from the Assemblyman commending their hard work.
“Part of creating a vibrant school community is having an active and engaged PTSA,” said Ra. “The members of the H. Frank Carey High School PTSA have gone above and beyond in ensuring that their school is afforded with the attention and activities it needs for our children to succeed. SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY LIBERTARIAN PARTY ANNOUNCES SLATE OF CANDIDATES TO TAKE ON THREE-TERM INCUMBENTS
(Suffolk County, NY) The Suffolk County Libertarian Party, in their meeting of February 19, 2013, selected a slate of candidates to go up against three time incumbents vying for a fourth term by filing a lawsuit to overturn term limits for the offices of DA, Sheriff and County Clerk. Apparently the Republican and Democrat parties are cross-endorsing the incumbents according to the article from SaveHuntington.com titled “The Gang of Three and the Banana Republic”.
The slate of Libertarian Candidates includes Michael Houze for Suffolk County Sheriff, Chris Garvey for Suffolk County DA and Audrey Capozzi for Suffolk County Clerk.
Michael Houze, father of two boys, was born in Greenberg, Indiana and studied Political Science at Indiana University. He moved to Long Island in 2005 and moved to South Huntington in 2006. He has been a member of the Libertarian Party since 1993 where he has served as Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary. He is a certified NRA Firearms instructor from 1988 to present.
Chris Garvey, graduate of Columbia University and Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law is a Patent Attorney for Nolte, Nolte & Hunter in Roslyn, NY. Mr. Garvey was the Libertarian Candidate for Suffolk County DA in 2009, Attorney General in 2006, and Governor in 1998 and was Conservative Candidates for Supreme Court Justice in Bronx, NY from 2001-2003. He is also a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer and Sailing Instructor.
Audrey Capozzi, from Bellport, NY, has served as Vice Chair and Treasure of the NY State Libertarian Party for the past 20 years and has been a National Voice for the LP serving on numerous committees as well as an organizer of the State Conventions.
