The Ladies’ Room Expo to Benefit Local Breast Cancer Fundraiser

February 2, 2007 – The Ladies’ Room Expo will showcase vendors from Long Island women-owned businesses and serve as a fundraiser for the local chapter of the Breast Cancer Foundation. The expo will take place on Sunday March 4, 2007 from 2pm-7pm at the Hilton Long Island Huntington at 598 Broad Hollow Road (Route 110) in Huntington, New York. Admission to the expo is free and there is ample free parking.

The expo will feature a Chinese Auction to benefit the local chapter of the Breast Cancer Foundation. Merchandise, services, and gift certificates have been donated from area businesses and businesses around the country to help raise money for this important cause. 100% of the funds collected from the sale of raffle tickets for the Chinese Auction will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation. A door prize of five free Chinese Auction entries will be given from 2pm-3pm.

This event will showcase vendors from local women-owned and operated businesses. Vendors will be present from various in-home party plan companies such as Mary Kay, Tupperware, Passion Parties, Partylite, Traveling Vineyard, and more. LIPA the NY Islanders & Long Island Idol Kevin Covais Hosts the Second Open-Audition of the “ENERGY STAR(r) Idol” Talent Contest

The Next Audition to be Held Saturday at the Roosevelt Field Mall

Uniondale, NY- February 7, 2007-The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is trying to discover Long Island’s hottest new singing talents in the first ever “ENERGY STAR IDOL” contest. As part of a unique partnership that seeks to educate youngsters about the environmental and economic benefits of energy efficiency. LIPA, Long Island’s very own Hockey team
the New York Islanders and Long Island’s American Idol Kevin Covais are looking for Long Island children under 18 to win over the judges with their version of the song “I am an ENERGY STAR.”

The next open-audition will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City.  The fun begins at 11:00AM with Kevin Covais performing and signing autographs for all the soon to be Energy STAR contestants.  This event is likely to be a great success and tons of fun.

The “ENERGY STAR IDOL” contest was officially launched on November 21, 2006. Kids ages 18 and under living in LIPA’s service area can participate in the contest by
singing their own version of LIPA’s “I am an Energy Star” theme song at an upcoming open-audition at selected locations across Long Island or they can submit a video of their performance by March 15, 2007.

The first “I am an Energy Star” open-audition was held at the Walt Whitman Mall back in January and was a huge success. There were many talented contestants singing their rendition of “I am an Energy STAR” which kept the competition strong and a great time was had by all.

In addition, Long Island’s own American Idol Kevin Covais preformed to the delight of the gathered contestants and hundreds of spectators. Also on hand was Sparky, the NY Islander’s mascot to help keep the party going.

Winners of the “I am an Energy Star” contest will be announced in April 2007 and contest winners will appear in LIPA’s upcoming energy efficiency advertising campaign. Each winner will also receive an Energy Star rated Macintosh laptop computer.

THE THEATRE MUSEUM PRESENT LECTURE ON EVOLVING AUDIENCES AND THEATRES

New York, New York – February 5, 2007 – The Theatre Museum is holding a lecture on the architectural history of New York theatres, including Times Square, as part of its inaugural exhibition, “Times Square Theatres: A New Century/A New Style.” The lecture, “Another Op’nin’, Another Theatre – Broadway’s Evolution,” will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at the Municipal Art Society, 457 Madison Avenue near 51st Street in New York City.  A reception will follow.

Exhibition curator Craig Morrison will speak about the changing 20th century theatre audience from male, working class, to families, to those remaining as radio and television took over popular entertainment, and beyond. The lecture will speak to “how the architectural form has evolved to suit these changing audiences,” he said.  Mr. Morrison is a theatre restoration architect, historian and author of Theatres, a recent Library of Congress book about theatres in America since the country’s founding

The exhibition, which will run through March 7, 2007, focuses on the architectural trends in 20th Century Broadway theatres.  It displays these trends with 8-foot panels presenting photographs, architectural plans, artifacts from some of the 13 theatres highlighted and historical data.  These panels demonstrate the transformation many of these theatres went through during the 20th century.

Those sponsoring the exhibition include Jujamcyn Theaters, Millennium Broadway Hotel Nederland Organization, New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, New York Marriott Marquis, The 42nd Street Fund, The Times Square Alliance, New Amsterdam Theatre and The Rockefeller Group.  This exhibition is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.  Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this exhibition do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Founded in 2003, The Theatre Museum is New York State’s first and only chartered, non-profit museum dedicated to the history of theatre.  It is a museum-at-large presenting exhibitions in collaboration with other cultural institutions.  The Museum’s programs include community outreach, such as teaching children how to write, direct and stage live theatre, and the annual Theatre Museum Awards for Excellence ceremony.  Its primary mission is to preserve, protect and perpetuate the legacy of theatre through innovative programming.

The Long Island Karting Association, LIKA, is holding their annual Karting EXPO on Sunday February 11th from 12 noon to 4:00pm at the Hilton in Melville on Route 110.

LIPA Reminds Long Islanders to Use Electric Space Heaters Safely

Uniondale, NY-February 2, 2007-Cold winter weather made a late arrival to the Long Island region this season. But now that frigid temperatures have arrived this often means the increased use of portable electric heaters. The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) urges all Long Islanders to use caution and common sense when using an electric space heater to
supplement home heating.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 25,000 residential fires every year are associated with the use of room (space) heaters. More than 300 persons die in these fires. And an estimated 6,000 persons receive hospital emergency room care for burn injuries associated with contacting hot surfaces of room heaters, mostly in non-fire situations.

 “The use of electric space heaters to supplement home heating systems becomes more commonplace during periods of extreme cold,” said LIPA CEO and President Richard M. Kessel. “When not used safely electric heaters are the leading cause of home fires during the winter months, and trails only cooking equipment as the leading cause of home fires year-round. We all need to remember that electric space heaters can be very hazardous when not used safely and with common sense.”

When using portable electric heaters please make sure to:

* Choose models that have automatic safety switches that turn off the unit if it is tipped over accidentally.
* Always look for a label or tag indicating the heater has been tested and approved by a recognized independent testing lab.
* Check the cord before plugging in the heater, if frayed, worn or broken, do not use it. Have an electrician replace the cord or replace the heater. Simply putting tape on the cord is not enough to prevent overheating and fire.
* Be sure your space heater is in good working condition. All space heaters need frequent checkups and cleaning. A dirty or neglected heater is a critical fire hazard.
* Keep young children away from space heaters, particularly when they are wearing nightgowns or loose clothing which can be drawn into the heater by a draft and ignited and never leave children unsupervised in a room with a space heater.
* Make sure the house wiring is adequate before using an electric heater. Avoid overloading the circuit or wall socket.
* Avoid using extension cords. Use an approved power strip with a built-in circuit breaker.
* Do not use electric space heaters in the bathroom. Never touch an electric heater when you are wet.
* Keep all heaters out of high traffic and exit areas and at least three feet away from curtains, newspapers or anything that might burn.

To avoid potential harm, LIPA encourages you to:

* Equip your home with a least one smoke alarm on each floor and outside sleeping areas.
* Install a CO alarm that meets the requirements of the current UL standard in the hallway near every separate sleeping area of the home.
* Keep at least one dry-powder operative, ABC-type fire extinguisher in the home at all times.
* Keep areas around heat sources free of papers and trash.
* Store paints, solvents and flammable liquids away from all heat and ignition sources.
* Develop a fire-escape plan before a fire occurs. Be certain that all members of the household understand the plan and are able to carry out the plan in case of emergency.
* Be sure the plan includes a predetermined meeting place outside the house.
* If your clothing does catch fire, don’t run! Drop down immediately, cover face with hands, and roll to smother the flames. Teach your family how to do this.
* Have annual safety checks on all home heating equipment.

LIPA to Reduce Power Supply Charge by 4% Overall Bills to Drop 2%

Reduction Effective February 1st

Uniondale, NY – January 30, 2007 – Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Chairman Kevin Law and LIPA’s Chief Executive Officer & President, Richard M. Kessel, today announced that starting February 1st LIPA’s Power Supply Charge will be reduced by an additional 4%, which will drop overall bills by 2%.

For a typical residential customer using 775 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per month, the latest bill reduction will produce a monthly savings of $3.01 and total savings of $36.12 over a 12-month period.  A commercial customer using 8,800 kWh per month could see a savings of about $34 per month or $408 over 12 months.

Since last January, LIPA’s Power Supply Charge has been reduced by 12.2%, resulting in a total bill reduction of 6.4%, which saves a typical residential customer $10.14 per month or $121.68 per year.

“This is a step in the right direction,” Mr. Law said.  “Looking forward, LIPA needs to continue to do everything it can to lower the Power Supply Charge as much as possible as soon as possible.”
Mr. Kessel said that the reduction in LIPA’s bills, by lowering its Power Supply Charge, is made possible by recent drops in the costs for fuel and purchased power, and the prospect that these costs will remain lower going forward in 2007.

“I’m very pleased that were able to lower our bills again by reducing the Power Supply Charge,” said Mr. Kessel.  “The historic increases in the cost of oil and natural gas that forced LIPA to pass along some of those increases to customers have eased up a bit.  The recent reductions in those costs allow us to pass along these savings to our residential and commercial customers.”

Mr. Kessel noted that LIPA did not increase its bills last year and in fact reduced its Power Supply Charge by 8.2% during 2006.  When coupled with the latest reduction, LIPA has managed to lower its Power Supply Charge by 12.2% in the last year.”

“At the very least, our goal is to maintain the bill and power supply reduction through 2007,” said Mr. Law. “If oil and gas prices continue to drop in the months ahead, we will reduce the Power Supply Charge again.”

“It’s important for customers to understand that LIPA does not control the oil and natural gas markets, especially if there is a world-wide crisis.  LIPA merely passes on increases or decreases depending upon the market prices for oil and natural gas,” said Mr. Kessel.

Last year, LIPA provided its customers with a new billing statement configuration that segregated the charges for delivering electricity to customers and those for the commodity.  LIPA’s Delivery & System Charges cover costs associated with operating and maintaining LIPA’s electric Transmission and Distribution System.  The Power Supply Charges cover costs associated with the price of oil, natural gas and purchased power.

While LIPA is lowering its Power Supply Charge by 4%, its Delivery & System Charge, which has remained steady since May, 1998, will remain unchanged.
