(Long Island, N.Y.) Hamptonites and Hampton Bays residents enjoyed the Hampton Bays Beautification Association Garden Party celebrating Their 25th Anniversary held at Tide Runners Restaurant on the Shinnecock Canal on Saturday, June 5. I had chance to chat with Executive Vice President Maud Kramer about the Hampton Bays Beautification Associations mission.
As you enter the Hamptons you approach Hampton Bays. From each direction you are welcomed into this Hamlet by blue and gold signs “Welcome to Hampton Bays.” These signs and the scenic landscapes exemplifies the community spirit, pride, involvement, and talent of the members of Hampton Bays Beautification Association. The organization was established in 1985 by passionate community individuals interested in beautifying their village. The organization now has over 1000 members and sponsors supporting this aesthetic effort. HBBA lends beauty to the scenic landscapes and provides both entertainment and pleasure to the lives of its members and the community.
HBBA collaborates with local county government and influential agencies within their community to achieve their goals in creating the Beautification of Hampton Bays. Many of the scenic improvements include the creation of the beautiful lighted Medians on Route 24 and the Shinnecock Canal Gateway, the placement of the rock and anchor at the UA theater plaza, the bricking along Main Street and the placement of brick planters. HBBA has placed many benches and planted trees along Main Street and in in their community parks. HBBA along with the Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Southampton played a major role in the development of the new Pocket Park located on Main Street. Some ongoing projects are the yearly purchase and maintaining of the flowering hanging baskets downtown. In the Autumn Their decorating committee comes together to place bright colorful banners throughout main street. During every holiday season HBBA also strategically places decorative lights and the Happy Holiday Banners on the lamp posts.

Executive Vice President Maud Kramer Cognac and President Susan von Freddi.
Throughout the year and during the seasons there are social events held annually to help fund the efforts of HBBA including the Garden Party and the Famous Chinese Auction held every June. One important event is the Garden Tour which takes place in July and showcases both the talents and efforts of Hampton Bay’s resident’s in their outstanding gardens. The Free Concert Under the Stars in August, the Autumn Dinner Dance held in November and the Holiday Luncheon each December are other many anticipated events that are important in achieving HBA’s goals in beautifying the community. HBBA participates in the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and has been the proud winner of “first place” in the float competition three times.
The planning and execution of these important fundraising events provides the membership the ability to utilize their talents and skills, as well as enjoy the camaraderie that develops from working together. The dedicated involved members and supporters truly enjoy their accomplishments and are extremely proud of their results that they achieve yearly.
This year The 2010 Beautification Award was awarded to Matsulin Restaurant and Shane Gritzinger and Owain Morgan of Hampton Bays.

Later we visited English Country Antiques 26 Snake Hollow Road in Bridgehampton,to interview Celebrity Interior Designer Scott Sanders about his recent publication ‘Picture Perfect’. Scott Sanders, author of the new book, “Picture Perfect: Designing the new American Family Home,” published by Pointed Leaf.
After graduating from Parsons School of Design, with an impressive degree in Interior Design, Scott Sanders embarked on his professional career at Polo Ralph Lauren. His talents created the company’s Interior Design Department and his accomplishments earned him the title Design Director enabling him to transform the residences of Polo Ralph Lauren clients in New York, California, Florida, Connecticut and Paris.
His much publicized renovation of the Beach House Bal Harbour Hotel for the Rubell family estate located in Miami Beach during his last year with Polo Ralph Lauren showcased Sanders evident signature style and was an influential force in establishing Scott Sanders LLC.
Scott’s interest for interior design began at the age of five in Ohio. The son and grandson of residential developers and builders, Scott grew up surrounded by construction materials and design elements. At both his father and grandfather’s side he accompanied them to construction sites and commercial vendors. Scott developed a sharp eye for texture, detail and color, He demonstrated such a gift for combining ideas together that, by the time he was twelve, he was in charge of selecting everything from bricks to bathroom tiles. And when he wasn’t in the field, Sanders spent hours crafting his first line of custom furniture from Lego sets and drawing house plans in which he detailed the placement of everything from furniture to landscaping.
This prodigious, early devotion to all aspects of the design process is now a hallmark of Sanders’ professional career. Clients know that they may rely on his time-tested ability to take the smallest theme or idea and transform it into a total living or working environment, where every element has been thought out and every option considered. From buying prestigious art collections to purchasing knick-knacks at a local flea market, no detail is too small or grand for Sanders’ professional eye.
Scott’s impressive portfolio includes homes in Bridgehampton, New York City, Aspen, Miami Beach, Palm Beach, and Jumby Bay, Antigua. His devoted clients trust his vision in creating their comfortable dwellings. More than two thirds of his client base is established by repeat customers to fulfill their interior design needs and challenges.
Many of his completed projects have been featured in prominent publications such as The New York Times, Veranda, House & Garden, House Beautiful, Interior Design, Hamptons Cottages & Gardens, German Architectural Digest, Travel & Leisure, and Elle Decor. His work has also been published in several books, including the Andrew Martin Interior Design Review, Vol. 8 and Vol. 9, which feature the world’s leading interior designers.
In the Hamptons, Scott Sanders has participated in the 2003 and 2005 Hampton Designer Showhouses. In April 2010, Pointed Leaf Press published Picture Perfect: Designing the New American Family Home, an innovative book that documents Sanders’ inspired youth, his accomplished career, and a project that represents the culmination of a four year adventure in interior design and catalogs in detail-from tile samples to bed linens, the many choices that transform an empty resident into a wonderfully functional family home.
