(Long Island, NY) A tomato weighing 2.54 lb. was the winner at Hicks Nurseries tomato contest last year and this year the judges are hoping to award prizes to a heavier tomato, as well as the largest in circumference, tiniest red and most unusual tomatoes.

Long Island gardeners – adults and children – are invited to bring their home-grown tomatoes to the 16th Annual Hicks Nurseries Tomato Contest to be held on Sunday, August 25, at the nursery in Westbury.
Prizes will be awarded for heaviest tomato, largest circumference, most unusual and tiniest red tomato.
Entries will be accepted at 10 am on the day of the contest only and judging will begin at 11 am. Each contestant can win in only one category. Tomatoes must be ripe and not frozen or previously frozen.
Hicks Nurseries is also encouraging children to bring in their “own-grown” tomatoes. Each child, 12 and under, will receive a special certificate. Children may also enter the contest.
