(Long Island, NY) Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman wrote an op-ed in the New York Daily News with Steven Choi, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition, on the need to move forward with President Obama’s executive action on immigration.
ON THE DANGERS OF DELAYING PRESIDENT OBAMA’S EXECUTIVE ACTION: If we delay implementing the President’s actions any longer, we will not only keep millions of immigrant families in the shadows, but also hinder efforts to strengthen state economies across the country.
ON THE BENEFITS OF THE PRESIDENT’S EXECUTIVE ACTION: If these executive actions are allowed to go forward, up to five million of our country’s residents will be able to register with the government, request a deferral from deportation, and apply for a temporary work permit. Enabling immigrants to work legally will trigger a cascade of benefits, from a rise in earnings to a rise in tax contributions.
ON PROTECTING IMMIGRANTS IN NEW YORK: The Attorney General’s Office, in collaboration with other local and state agencies, and non-profit organizations, is working to combat immigration services fraud to ensure that communities are not taken advantage of by individuals and businesses that falsely claim they are able to provide a pathway to citizenship.
