Statement from AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel on report released today
(Long Island, NY) The following statement was released today from AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel on the report released by Governor Cuomo’s Moreland Commission on Utility Storm Preparation and Response (note: the Commission’s consumer advocacy recommendations can be found on pages 44-46 of the report):
“This is a game changer for utility consumers. New Yorkers pay the highest residential electric rates in the continental United States, and they need relief. Governor Cuomo’s Moreland Commission listened to their concerns, and AARP applauds commission members for recommending a strong, independent and adequately funded consumer advocate.
“Former Attorney General Abrams hit the nail on the head by pointing out that utility customers have historically been disadvantaged by lack of a level playing field. Consumers need someone to push back when utilities push for rate hikes, and the commission is recommending ratepayers get just that.”
