AARP Releases National Report Showing Economic Benefits of Social Security; Chained CPI Would Slow Inflation-Linked Growth in Social Security Payments
(Long ISland, NY) AARP volunteers and staff deliver petitions to Rep. Carolyn McCarthy’s Garden City office bearing the names of 6,000 of her constituents who oppose the “Chained CPI,” a proposal to reduce yearly cost-of-living adjustments in Social Security benefits. AARP calculates the Chained CPI would cost seniors and veterans in Nassau County who receive Social Security benefits more than $682 million over the next 10 years, and those in Suffolk County over $724 million. AARP releases a national report, with New York State numbers, showing the economic benefits of Social Security.
Who: AARP Associate New York State Director William Stoner and AARP volunteers.
When: Tuesday, October 1, 2013, 1 p.m.
Where: Rep. Carolyn McCarthy’s Garden City Office, 300 Garden City Plaza, Suite 200, Garden City, NY 11530
Why: AARP and its members strongly oppose the proposed “Chained CPI,” which would cut the annual inflationary growth in Social Security benefits on the mistaken assumption that recipients can buy cheaper versions of goods – including necessities with fixed prices such as utilities and prescription medications. A new national AARP report will show the economic benefits of Social Security nationally and in New York State.
