(New York, NY) There has been a location change for this Saturday’s demonstration for World Day for Farmed Animals, now outside P&M Live Poultry Market. This is being hosted by local animal rights activists from NY Farm Animal Save and national nonprofit Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM).
What:
A protest against P&M Live Poultry, part of World Day for Farmed Animals, a coordinated, targeted series of demonstrations at slaughterhouses and other animal agriculture facilities around the world to oppose the abuses inherent in animal agriculture.
Following the demonstration, that afternoon, the group will hold a vigil at the live poultry market Ildaro Live Poultry, also in Flushing.
Who:
Local animal rights activists from NY Farm Animal Save, along with national nonprofit Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM).
Why:
65 billion land animals are raised and killed for food around the world every year. Of land animals killed each year in the U.S., 91% are chickens raised for meat, 4.5% are chickens raised for eggs, and 2.5% are turkeys (based on 2010 numbers). This protest is part of a coordinated, targeted series of demonstrations at slaughterhouses and other animal agriculture facilities around the world in observance of the 30th annual World Day for Farmed Animals. www.DayForAnimals.org. Similar events are being held in more than 100 North American locations and around the world. The international day of action typically includes vigils, marches, and demonstrations, and takes place each year on or around October 2 in conjunction with the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, an outspoken advocate of non-violence towards animals.
