On the Heels of a Damning Letter to Governor Cuomo by Prominent Legislators, Progressive Groups Join the Call for a Halt on Success School Expansion Until Investigation is Completed
(Long Island, NY) A day after Hazel Dukes, Bertha Lewis and prominent elected officials addressed a damning letter to Governor Cuomo on Success Academy’s discipline practices that allegedly target students that they want to push out from their schools, civil rights leaders and progressive groups will rally and call on the SUNY Board of Trustees to launch an immediate investigation. Parents will echo the call to halt all expansion of Success Academy Charter Schools until the completion of the investigation and the resolution of the issues identified.
The facts uncovered the New York Times report are disturbing, and call for a thorough investigation of school suspensions and student push out at Success Academy.
While our country tries to move away from the school-to-prison pipeline caused by the record suspensions and the over-criminalization of young people of color, Eva Moskowitz has made it clear that punitive methods like suspension will remain a part of her schools’ practices.
The SUNY Board of Trustees, who approves expansion of Charter Schools in New York City, must investigate the reports of a “Got to Go” list, the use of 911 calls to deal with student discipline, and the routine suspensions of children in Kindergarten through third grade.
