Long term solutions, not temporary fixes, are needed
(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino (R,C,I-Sayville) today expressed disappointment about Gov. Cuomo’s State of the State address, which failed to appropriately address tax relief and again saw Long Island go unmentioned.
“I am pleased that Gov. Cuomo agrees that our property taxes are far too inflated, but his proposals are temporary fixes that will do nothing but delay the inevitable increases to our property taxes,” said Garbarino. “What we really need is effective mandate relief for our struggling localities and a long-term plan to reduce the tax burden. Many residents here in Suffolk County are being priced out of the homes they have worked their lives to live in. It’s time that we address our exorbitant state income and property taxes.”
Garbarino also expressed his displeasure with, for the second year in a row, Long Island going unmentioned during the governor’s speech. “The fact that this governor has continuously used Long Island as a ‘piggy bank’ to fund NYC and the rest of the state is egregious enough, but to again completely ignore the hardworking families on Long Island in his vision outlined during the State of the State is deplorable.”
“I was also very disappointed that the governor completely ignored our children’s educational needs by failing to even mention Common Core,” said Garbarino. “I have received countless calls and letters from parents, teachers and administrators who are displeased with our state’s new, misguided curriculum. The education of our children needs to be addressed during this legislative session and I will continue to fight for the best possible education for every child.”
He concluded, “There were some proposals I strongly support, including stricter penalties for repeat drunk drivers, reforming the estate tax and the disabled veteran’s business incentives, but overall this seemed to be nothing more than a campaign speech at a time when our state needs strong leadership and ideas.”
Assemblyman Garbarino represents the 7th Assembly District on Long Island.
