A Statement from the desk of Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino (R,C,I-Sayville)
(Long Island, NY) “The Board of Regents is essential to providing our students with the necessary framework to succeed academically. Our students, teachers, principals and education stakeholders deserve advocates that represent the diverse nature of the state of New York. Following today’s results I extend my congratulations to the newest members of the Board of Regents and I hope they will provide the leadership necessary for the future of our students.
“Although I remain optimistic in the potential each candidate brings to the table, I am also disappointed that we are adding yet another New York City-based member to the Board. I have consistently advocated that we elect an individual that understand a more suburban based perspective and is familiar with the interests outside of the metro region.
“It is critical that we provide our communities with a balanced and diverse set of opinions to address the issues facing our education system. In the future I hope the selection and confirmation process will be modified so the needs of the entire state can be heard. While there have been changes over the years it is still unacceptable that the Assembly Majority dominates the dialogue and forces out the opinions of other groups in New York.”
